ZIDANE SPEAKS OUT ON RAMOS’ FUTURE

The iconic centre-back has not signed on for fresh terms at the Santiago Bernabeu as speculation rages over his future

Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane has been cagey over the future of captain Sergio Ramos.

The defender, who has become an icon at the Bernabeu over his 16-year stay, is out of contract at the end of the season.

Madrid are struggling to agree terms with the 34-year-old, and several of Europe’s biggest clubs have been linked with a potential move for him on a free transfer come the summer.

Zidane said “You always ask me the same thing – he’s an impressive man. I want him to get fit, but apart from that, nothing else. Tomorrow we have a game,” Zidane told a press conference on Sunday ahead of a Primera Division clash against Real Sociedad the following day.

Tuchel explains why Werner was left out of Chelsea’s starting line-up vs Man Utd

Thomas Tuchel has revealed his thinking behind the dropping of Timo Werner to the Chelsea bench for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United.

After hitting the ground running for the Blues, Werner endured a difficult patch that saw him go 15 Premier League matches without finding the net.

His overall level of performance remains in doubt, despite breaking that duck against Newcastle on February 15.

When asked about the decision to drop the Germany international striker, Tuchel said: “We had the feeling to give Timo a little break, to have him from the bench and also fresh for the fixture against Liverpool.

“I felt him a little bit tired after many games in a row.”

Golden Shoe 2020-21: Lewandowski, Ronaldo and Europe’s top scorers

The race for the 2020-21 Golden Shoe is on as the best strikers from across Europe look to boost their goal tallies and be crowned the contintent’s No 1 sharp-shooter.

Lazio’s Ciro immobile took the accolade in 2019-20,finishing ahead of Robert Lewandowski, Cristiano Ronaldo, Timo Werner and Lionel Messi, but intense competition means he will have to fight to retain it.

That posse will no doubt be to the fore in the goal charts again this season, as well as other contenders like Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and even Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is rolling back the years at AC Milan.

1. Robert Lewandowski | Bayern Munich | 28 goals (56)

Bayern Munich talisman Robert Lewandowski has been one of the best strikers in the world for a number of years now and he continues to hit the back of the net with regularity despite heading into his mid-thirties.

2. Lionel Messi | Barcelona | 19 goals (38)

One of the greatest goalscorers of all time, Lionel Messi got off to a slow start in 2020-21, but he has shown signs of improvement in the second half of the season.

3. Andre Silva | Eintracht Frankfurt | 19 goals (38)

Andre Silva struggled to live up to expectations at AC Milan and Sevilla, but he appears to have found his groove in the Bundesliga, where he is one of the main goal threats for Eintracht Frankfurt.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo | Juventus | 19 goals (38)

Cristiano Ronaldo recovered from a slow start last season to mount a serious challenge for the Golden Boot, but he has been prolific from the beginning this term, despite a brief Covid-19-enforced period of isolation. He will hope to clinch an award he hasn’t got his hands on since 2014-15.

5. Kylian Mbappe | PSG | 18 goals (36)

Injuries and the Covid-19 pandemic severely impacted Kylian Mbappe’s goal return last season, but he has hit the ground running for Paris Saint-Germain in 2020-21.

6. Romelu Lukaku | Inter | 18 goals (36)

Romelu Lukaku continues to shine at Inter and his worth to the club is reflected in the fact that he reached the 50-goal milestone for the club, doing so in fewer games than the legendary Ronaldo Nazario.

7. Erling Haaland | Borussia Dortmund | 17 goals (34)

Having joined Borussia Dortmund mid-way through last season, there were some doubts about Erling Haaland’s capacity to make the step up in the Bundesliga, but his transition has been seamless. Indeed, his goal return so far suggests that he has even taken it up a notch.

Arsenal seal first away win at top three Premier League team in six years with victory at Leicester

David Luiz, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe were in the goals as the Gunners came from behind to beat the Foxes on Sunday afternoon

Arsenal recorded their first away win against a top three Premier League team for six years when they beat Leicester 3-1 on Sunday.

The Gunners went behind just six minutes into the clash with the Foxes as Youri Tielemans fired low past Bernd Leno, but Mikel Arteta’s team fought back later in the half when a free-kick from Willian was met by the head of David Luiz and evaded Kasper Schmeichel’s grasp, before Alexandre Lacazette converted a penalty in stoppage time.

Nicolas Pepe then rounded off the scoring in the second half as the visitors recorded their second win in six Premier League matches.

SEE WHAT CHELSEA COACH SAID ABOUT TIMO WERNER PLAYING STYLE

The Blues are keeping the ball well but it could be at the expense of their explosive striker, who likes to run into space

Thomas Tuchel believes that Chelsea’s style of play sometimes holds Timo Werner back as the possession-hungry side cause opponents to sit in defensive shapes.

Chelsea have averaged 69 per cent possession in the six league games since Tuchel has taken over, which has caused their rivals to sit deep and hit them on the counterattack.

Werner has scored just once in the eight matches since Tuchel came in. Although the forward has shown signs of improvement, the Blues will demand more from their £47.5 million signing from RB Leipzig.

Tuchel said he sympathised with Werner’s struggles and explained why he continues to select him despite a lack of goals.

“Maybe it is our fault because we have a lot of possession and we push opponent teams very, very deep in their half so spaces are not too big,” Tuchel said.

“The biggest strength of Timo is to attack the space behind the last line so it is maybe also our fault in the dominant game that we play in the moment, it is very natural that the spaces are closed by the opponents.

“A game like against Atletico, is there any team out there in the world that can close spaces like Atletico? I don’t know. This is not exactly the opponent that you wish for Timo to show all his skills, so what is left for him is to not lose faith and work for the team.

“We are reflecting a lot about this and working a lot with him.

“There are also solutions in tight spaces to use his speed in the first metres, to use his acceleration.

“But it is not easy for him and I can totally see this and it is why I am very patient and very supportive and I believe in his potential and character and of course his goalscoring skills.”

JAMB conducts accreditation exercise for CBT centres ahead of 2021 UTME/DE registration

Ahead of the 2021 UTME and Direct Entry registration exercise, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has conducted a centre accreditation and validation exercise of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres to be used for the forthcoming registration and examination.

The five-day exercise which started on Wednesday, 17th February 2021, and ended on Friday, 22nd February 2021, was aimed at determining the suitability of the old and new examination centres.

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, in his brief remarks on the occasion, said centre accreditation and validation is the first step towards the commencement of the 2021/22 UTME/DE exercise.. 2021 UTME Candidates are therefore advised to start preparing for their exams using the jamb CBT computer softwares and jamb CBT mobile app

According to him, he expects that this year’s exercise would record even greater successes. In effect, if a centre falls below expectations, it should not be accredited because if such a centre is found to be defective, a huge question mark is placed on your grading and integrity as a team.”

Speaking also, the JAMB’s Director of Information Technology said the board added some new guidelines for CBT centres which include but not limited to a redesigned form that would mandate new and old CBT centres to supply the National Identification Number (NIN) of their designated officials adding that any CBT centre that flouts this directive through providing fake NIN, among others, would be sanctioned. Other guidelines include the submission of registration details of any particular centre with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) for private centres and those privately-owned but located in the campuses of tertiary institutions. Mr. Okoro also informed the CTAs that the Board frowns at centres sharing premises as it preferred them to be stand-alone entities.

Mr. Okoro called for a more spacious holding room to comply with relevant protocols on COVID-19 particularly with regard to social distancing. Other things that the CTAs had to check, according to the Director, include inhouse restrooms in the examination hall to prevent impersonation and reckless movements.

The Director also stressed that the Board would not accept anything less than the Windows 10 Operating System. In addition, he urged CTAs to inform centres that only a uniform white background should be used while taking the candidates’ passports as that would make for a clearer picture. The Director said all these measures were intended to forestall failure from any CBT centre, while announcing that about 654 old centres and 119 new centres would be accredited in the exercise.

SEE WHAT PIQUE SAY AFTER 2:0 VICTORY AGAINST SEVILLA

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique insisted the Liga title race is still wide open after his side narrowed the gap on leaders Atletico Madrid with a 2-0 victory over Sevilla on Saturday.

Lionel Messi scored one and set up the other for Ousmane Dembele as Ronald Koeman’s side moved to within two points of Atletico, albeit having played two games more.

Diego Simeone’s side can restore their five-point advantage with victory at Villarreal on Sunday.

Pique hopes Saturday’s win, their second in the space of four days, can act as a springboard for the rest of the season after an inconsistent few weeks.

Koeman’s side were well beaten by Paris Saint-German in the champions league and also need to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit against Sevilla in the Copa del Rey semi-final next week.

“There’s a title race, definitely,” he told reporters. “We’ve seen much worse things and the team, despite those two games [against Sevilla and PSG], is one to believe in this year.

“Sevilla, at home, didn’t have a shot on target nor created clear chances.

“It’s not an ideal situation, but I’m confident in the team. Everything is in our head. If we turn it around on Wednesday [against Sevilla], the season changes completely.

“We’d be in the final of the Copa, we’re still alive in La Liga”
